Niger – “the worst country in the world to live in”

We regularly hear news about the appalling conditions in Afghanistan or Somalia. At times there has been focus on Eritrea, Sierra Leone, Mozambique and more recently Yemen, when these countries have been hit by war, flood, drought and other problems.

But there has been little focus on the suffering in Niger. Time and time again, when we visit the country, we see the same thing. We meet hungry and suffering people who lack even the bare necessities of life. Time and time again, their harvest fails, year after year food prices rise while the average wage goes down. For a number of years, the OECD has ranked Norway as the best country in the world to live. At the same time, Niger has been ranked as the worst country to live. We have just seen another Christmas in Norway and once more wallowed in affluence. I challenge you now to share with our brothers and sisters in Niger.
